Writing in Community

Publish your book in December. A community of practice from Akimbo.

It works better together.

Writing, like most things, can be a solitary endeavor. But if we can find the right support network, we can make it easier, more productive and more joyful.

Here’s the opportunity: Stop talking about being a published writer and become one instead. We’re assembling a group of people who want to support each other in a 6-month journey to publish a book, your book, on the Kindle before the end of the year.

No lessons, no gurus. Simply encouragement, accountability, peer feedback and more encouragement.

Fifteen minutes a day is the only commitment you need to make. Show up in our community daily, and you’ll find the inspiration and discipline to create your book and ship it to the world.

A step by step process to write, edit and ship your book on the Kindle before the end of 2020.

From solstice to solstice, a worldwide community of writers, working side by side for six months to publish a first book. A novel, a cookbook, poetry, a how-to guide. You choose. A simple first attempt or a tour de force. It doesn’t matter.

What matters is that you published your work.

And then, back to work on the next one, a better one. Because at that point, you're not pretending. You're an author.

We’ll celebrate in the last week of the session by all writing the first sentence of our next book.

Built on the proven Akimbo platform

More than 20,000 people around the world have leveled up with Akimbo. We’ve found extraordinary levels of participation and productivity from the creators we work with, because we don’t focus on traditional measures of education--instead, we create active communities and invite people to become better at what matters to them.

We’ve organized the communities around streaks, generous feedback and the magic of connection. Our students have launched businesses, led project teams and found new ways to communicate and lead. And of course, they’ve written books as well.

And now we’re introducing our first community of practice where we are helping you level up and become a published writer, sharing your thoughts with the world.

Getting started is always the hardest part. For me, this experience was a great instigator in all the best of ways. It provides a space for accountability, encouragement and connection that leads to productivity. Thank you for creating a wonderful community that gets me one giant step closer to being finished and fulfilled. PS Kristin is a phenomenal facilitator!

You already know how to write

If you can write a sentence, you can write a paragraph. And a paragraph gets you a page. And a page gets you a chapter…

Inside the community, you’ll find categories and conversations based on specific challenges. There’s a regular topic focused on structure. Another on audience. A third on genre.

What you won’t find is any official answer on the correct and only way to do it. And not a word about marketing, pricing or getting the word out. It’s not about the business of publishing, it’s about the art of being published.

You’re there, with the others, for each other.

Day by day.

To finish a book.

Organized by experienced coaches, but led by you

The Akimbo coaching community is vast and generous. Organized by coach Kristin Hatcher, Writing in Community is a chance for you to find the others. We’re inviting people like you--people with passion and skill, but who might feel stuck or uninspired at times.

The magic of this community is that it bypasses all of our easy excuses. It creates a safe and trusted place to do your work, and combines it with a mutual agreement around a simple commitment: The book will be on the Kindle by the New Year.

Learning from SNL

Lorne Michaels may have said, “Saturday Night Live doesn’t go on because it’s ready. It goes on because it’s 11:30.”

With 180 days together, there’s plenty of time. Plenty of time to create work you’re proud of, plenty of time to do the work you’d like to do. But somehow, in the past, it hasn’t gotten done.

This community of practice will help you get it done.

This community helped me to achieve something I had always wanted to do, and attempted to do many times in the past to no avail, and that’s establishing a daily writing practice. Very grateful to be part of this community.

There’s another way forward

It’s time to re-write the myth of the writer alone and suffering and waiting for the muse. What happens when the writer joins a community of people all moving in the same direction? What inspiration is found? What wisdom is gleaned? What insight is uncovered?

The words are yours and yours alone to write. But, you don’t have to do it alone. There’s a community being built for you.

This is a space where each and every day writers will be at work -- hundreds of them. People just like you. People who have something on the inside that they know must be on the outside. People who have something to say, an experience to unpack, a stanza to share, a character to introduce.

Around the clock, people will be writing.

Around the world people will be reading one another’s work and offering feedback. This is an unprecedented opportunity for you to write and share and write and share -- over and over again—straight through to a published book.

Before this experience, I knew that writing was the path I needed to take for self discovery and helping others, but I didn't have discipline around the practice. Write Now and Write Streak have given me the push I needed to actually get the writing done, and the community of writers has enriched my life immeasurably! Not only am I traveling the path, I have beautiful people sharing the journey, and I am grateful.

It’s time to turn pro

To be a professional is a bold step forward. A professional doesn’t simply work for money, but a professional takes the promise seriously. Show up even if you don’t feel like it. Show up because you said you would and because you have work to do. Show up because you’re a professional, and that’s what professionals do.

Every person in this community will have made a commitment. It’s not like a typical social media group, with people ghosting on you. We’re here together, and we have a purpose. And that’s how we will show up each and every day.

The community costs less than two dollars a day. That’s the table stakes. Your $365 commitment helps you remind yourself and the others that you’re in it for real.

Join Kristin and her colleagues in community. Show up daily. Drip by drip, day by day, ship the work.

If you’re serious about your writing, we’re ready to connect you, encourage you and give you a space to make magic. We can’t wait to see what you write. Together.

Is this for fiction or nonfiction?

You have the chance to write a book in 2020. Will you take it?

The combination of a (seemingly simple) 15 minute commitment, seeing the team's check boxes fill day by day, and knowing that we are each working to the same end, provides the motivation and tension to keep up the habit of daily writing and shipping. At the time of this testimonial, I have written 112 consecutive daily posts.

I can come up with hundreds of ways to avoid writing. This experience has completely changed my mindset. It’s about showing up, doing the work, and sharing the experience with people around the world. I do some of my best writing in these sessions because there’s a sense of calm and focus that comes with quietly working within a supportive community.

This might not be a good time

The world is topsy turvy. For too many of us, that means uncertainty and hardship. We’re running this online, interactive workshop now because we think one of the most important things we can do to contribute is to help people learn and make their best work.

[If you need help from a real person drop a line to hello@writingincommunity.com.]

We offer a full refund for your registration up until three days before the community starts. Just let us know if something comes up.

In the meantime, here are some of the free assets we’re delighted to recommend:

There are thousands of blog posts from Seth on how to level up here.

Seth’s interviews and talks on YouTube are always available as well.

We’re in for a slog, but there will be another side. Your contribution matters now more than ever.
